Failed work.

I was asked to write a draft for one of my module but eventually the lecturer rejected it and asked me to rewrite due to out of topic. I had spent more than 24 hrs on writhing this "piece of trash" and one of my friends had helped me to correct most of the errors (thanks!) and I just cannot, you know, dump it into "Trash" and pretend nothing happened. Well, here it goes...

Writing Assignment 3

Lule claims that journalists form the narrative line of news articles around seven specific myths. From this, what problem could you raise to test the model’s descriptive adequacy?

An Acceptable Scapegoat

Jack Lule’s “Seven Master Myths in the News”[1] claims that there is always seven specific myths, not always all but at least one which govern the narrative line of news articles. These specific myths are “The Victim” (e.g. a victim from a robbery), “The Scapegoat” (e.g. same-sex marriage), “The Hero” (e.g. a world champion of a sport), “The Good Mother” (e.g. Mother Teresa), “The Trickster” (e.g. Osama Bin Laden), “The Other World” (e.g. western society, from the point of view of an African) and “The Flood” (e.g. Haiti earthquake in the early 2010).

Having said “The Scapegoat”, I would like to take this opportunity to further elaborate the meaning of “The Scapegoat” based upon the essay’s model. “The Scapegoat” would represent a figure who personifies “guilt and evil”. It is because they are seen as deviating from a community’s social values and sense of best practice. As such, “The Scapegoat” is regarded as a potential agent of change of the community’s values and beliefs. To prevent unfavorable changes, the scapegoat is publicly humiliated and either socially marginalized or expelled from the community. One more example would be beauty pageant in the Arabic world. Despite the fact that same-sex marriage and beauty pageant in the Arabic world would be regarded as “guilt and evil”, the population that embraces these ideas is gradually increasing and thus challenges the core values and beliefs of “The Scapegoat”. For simplicity, I would like to take homosexuality and same-sex marriage as the fundamental platform and thus study the acceptability of “The Scapegoat” in the community, which is in contrast with the core belief of “The Scapegoat” will be expelled from the community. These works are based upon the stories of legalization of the same-sex marriage in Washington D.C at the late 2000s from journalist Ian Urbina of The New York Times.

Why homosexuality and same-sex marriage considered “The Scapegoat”? It is because homosexuality is prohibited by one of the largest youth charity organization in US-the Boy Scouts[2], object by Congressional Republicans and conservative Democrats[3] and same-sex marriage is unacceptable by one of the largest religion in the world, the Roman Catholic.[4] To them, homosexuality and same-sex marriage are “guilt and evil”. Homosexuality in the Boy Scouts is prohibited because it is inconsistent with the tradition values which instill correct behavior in scouts and help all the individuals scouts to make correct decision over their lifetimes.[5] On the other hand, same-sex marriage is unacceptable in the Roman Catholic because same-sex marriage is not a “correct path toward holiness”.[6] It would ruin the holinesses of human being as well as the beliefs of the religion. Because the numbers of people who is either scouts or believes in Roman Catholic or both are large and object by the congressional Republicans and conservative Democrats, it is understandable that homosexuality and same-sex marriage are “The Scapegoat” in the community.

In 2000, a scout was barred from serving the public due to involve into a gay incident.[7] In 2003, the Boy Scouts chapter in Philadelphia dismissed a devoted member due to openly challenged the organization’s policy by announcing on television that he was gay.[8] We can see that “The Scapegoat” will be expelled from the community which will prevent similar incident from happening again in order to keep the values, beliefs and practice of the organization on the track.

However, as more and more people would like to “define” human rights are the fundamental civic right of freedom and equality, the Boy Scouts in Philadelphia is in hot water. On late 2007, as Philadelphia’s City Council endorsed the gay-right, it declared that it would stop the lease of the Beaux Arts building to the Boy Scout for $1 annually if the charity organization remains its stand.[9] Not long after the incident of the Boy Scouts in Philadelphia, the fight between the gay-right and the religion of the Roman Catholic has finally begun in the capital of the US. On October 6, 2009, the council of Washington D.C announced officially that they would consider same-sex marriage despite the protest of the Roman Catholic and the harsh criticism from the conservative Democrats and Congressional Republicans[10]. As the Roman Catholic cannot tolerate with same-sex marriage, the Catholic Charities which serves 68,000 local residents and received $8.2 million in city contract in 2008, would stop its social service program that help residents with health care, homelessness and adoption. It may even shut down the partnership with the city in these social services.[11] In addition, the Roman Catholic will not take part in same-sex marriage ceremony or give use of their church hall.[12]

On December 15, 2009, the Washington D.C Council approved same-sex marriage. Under the bill, all religions reserve the right to take part in same-sex marriage or not.[13] Ironically in fact, some religions support same-sex marriage as they embrace social equality and justice.[14] Some economists from Los Angeles claimed that same-sex marriage could even give the capital’s economics a boost as it would bring $5 million in tax revenue and create 700 jobs: based on the estimation that more than 14,000 same-sex couple, in three years, would sign the marriage registration form once same-sex marriage is legalized in the capital.[15] However the Roman Catholic remains their stand and refuses to accept the civic rights bill.

On March 3, 2010, the long awaited dream for the same-sex couple in the capital had finally come true. Gay and lesbian marriage is legal in Washington D.C. The Roman Catholic had declared to limit its health care benefits to avoid coverage of same-sex couples to against the new legislation.[16]

In conclusion, it was the perception of the civic right for human freedom and equality, the comparatively large number of population (28,000 in this case) who is homosexual and the economics’ prospect that embrace “The Scapegoat”. Although “The Scapegoat” perceived as “socially marginalized or expelled from the community”, it was not the case in the US in homosexuality and same-sex marriage. “The Scapegoat” will evolve in time and “grow” with other factors and elements. Indeed, it is very hard to judge “The Scapegoat” like same-sex marriage in a democratic society (due to the nature of the voting system). “The Scapegoat” might be wrong and has no room for tolerance today but it might become acceptable in the near future. Nevertheless, one thing we can be certain is that “The Scapegoat” does exist in journalism and journalists play an important role in judging “The Scapegoat” under their pen. Through their pen, they can convey the ideology to the community and influence the community and thus make “An Acceptable Scapegoat” possible.

My 2 cents' worth of opinion of our world.

After watching the movie "Avatar", I agree that there is a "hidden" massage that the director wanted to bring across to the world. But, right now, human just cant stop the emission of greenhouse gases soon simply because it will crash with the economy and billions of people will lose their job. And then, a lot of people will starve to death.

I believe that the root-cause is simply because of the Industrial Revolution, which designed to turn energy to become economy. Back to 18th to 19th century, before the Industrial Revolution, people do not aware of the greenhouse gases as well as global warming. The benefits that the Industrial Revolution brought us are tremendous and human, with sufficient job opportunities and income, start to "breed".

Right now, the earth has to "feed" 6.69 billions of human being (if each person take 25 cm, the queue is much longer than the distance between the moon and the earth!) and if we human really wanted to reduce greenhouse gases, we have to control the population. It is the huge population that consume so much energy causing the problem. But, by controlling the population, some downfall will surface. Some of the small countries will lose their competitive to the rest of the countries simply due to aging population as well as lacking the human resource to run the country. Some of the big countries, like India and Brazil, will think that it is unfair to their own government because their main income- tax, have to be reduce due to lower population of the country. Therefore, i suggest to have a "one world one nation" policy: there will be only one government in the world, which choose by the citizen of the world. By having only one government, it will save us a lot of resources as well as unnecessary problem. Example, our passport and the "white card" we use for traveling. In order to produce our passport and the white card, millions of trees have to be sacrifice. In addition, this policy will also erase the unnecessary competition between nations, create no war and allow the government to control the population effectively. Just like the "government" for the "blue people" in the planet of "Avatar".

But racism and greed are in most of the human blood. My suggestion will only be practical if most of the human being can get rid of these and instead, fill with the spirit of, which is common in Mother Teresa, Jesus Christ, Buddha, and etc, love.

My T-shirt design.

"The true beauty that will last forever. Physics." These are the words behind the t-shirt.

Well, here is my design and I'm going to submit it to Physics Society NUS in order to participate the annual t-shirt design competition.

For those are not physics major, I think they will not understand the meaning of the design. Well (I hope you are interested in my design), in order to understand/appreciate (it's an art, right?) the design, firstly you have to know who these gentlemen are. From the far left, he is Mr. Maxwell and he's the one who "combined" Gauss's law, Gauss's law for magnetism, Ampere's law and Faraday's law to became Maxwell's equations (creative, huh?). Guess what, Mr. Santa was his idol (just kidding). Right beside Mr. Maxwell, he was once Mr. Santa's best friend (again, just kidding) and his name is Ludwig Boltzmann. Mr. Boltzmann was one of the founders who created Statistical Mechanics (in short, SM) and he is also very famous for philosophy.

After Mr. Boltzmann, here we have the hero who has ended WWII "indirectly" by being one of the head consultants for The Manhattan Project. His name is Enrico Fermi and Mr. Fermi is also one of the greatest scientist and teacher ever. Right after Mr. Fermi, here he comes, Mr. Dirac. Mr. Dirac don't smoke and drink and his works for Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Field Theory (relativistic quantum mechanics) are tremendous. He is also regarded as one for the greatest physicist ever (both in personality and his works).

Hmm.. Who is this gentleman beside Mr. Dirac? Well, his name is Satyendra Nath Bose. Ring a bell? Boson was named after this gentleman (such a big honor!) and guess what, he has no Ph.D throughout his life! This is really amazing and I think we should set him as our role model! Lastly, needless to tell, everybody knows him and his theories are "unbelievable"!

So, together, they are "Maxwell-Boltzmann statistic", "Fermi-Dirac statistic" and "Bose-Einstein statistic" (just google one of these and you'll find a lot of information about these statistics"). Their theories are very important in physics because without these statistics, human being will not able to explain "black body radiation" and we will not be able to understand the universe further.

Well, as long as the universe and human being are exist, these theories will exist, too. Therefore, don't you agree with me that "Physics. The true beauty that will last forever."?

Japan.

I used to have "no feeling" (no sympathy as well) for Japan or any Japanese when i was younger simply due to WWII. It was when i started to learn robotic automation during my diploma study that the precision and the design of SCARA robotic arm and Linear Module, manufactured by "Ponosonic" that amazed me have started to slowly change my mind. "There are USA, Germany and so many great countries which are good in robotic, why must we use Japanese?" That time onwards, i started to keep an eye on all Japanese product.

In my hometown, I have a "DKD" fan, a "Rational" TV and refrigerator and a "Bonda" C70 (due to copyright, i don't think i can mention the name of the brand correctly) and they all are more than 25-year-old, except the C70 which i believe is around 15-year-old but it was entitled "The Greatest Motorbike of All Time", according to "Piscovery Channel". These products are really amazingly robust and i started to have faith as well as the mentality of "made-in-Japan-only".

When i was an inkjet technical specialist at "Hawlett-Pockard" (a very famous USA company), i had once dropped my jaw because, i can safely say, 1/3 of the production lines are Japanese! These are "SCM", "Kayence", "Yoskawa", "Apson SCARA robot", "Harata" and much much more. At first, i thought the reason they choose to use Japanese is because these are the cheaper alternative. But after i have done some buying with the supply chain, i realized that these products aren't cheap either. The machine builder decided to use Japanese is simply because these are the best in the world and, on top of that, they knew that any production downtime due to quality issue from the machine itself is not acceptable.

After knowing all these brands and facts, i started to concern about Japan (economically, politically, geographically and etc) and eventually became a hard-core "Yokoso! Japan" fan. I have already visited Japan twice before (total 31 days) and in fact now, I have already started the plan of visit Japan for another 31 days again right after my super-hard-earned B. Sc graduation. I think the feeling is just like meeting your beloved girlfriend after 10 years of apart!

I can't really imagine how exciting i will be the moment I'm heading to the airport again!

Naruto.

If you have read "Finally..AY09/10 is over..", you'll know that I'll watch Naruto when I wanted a break after study. Well, for me, Naruto is really very nice and it never fail to boost my morale when i was depressed by my poor results or rejected by someone that i would like to have "date" with (Opps..!).

If you know me well enough, it is not that hard to see that, in fact, I'm very weak in physics and most of my time, my grades are disappointing. As you can see from the picture (one of my quiz's result of Quantum Mechanics) on top, i got 7/10 and i got a very big "Good!!!". Dose those normally got 7/10 will get a very big "Good!!!" once they got 10/10? I don't think so and i guess you can see how bad i did for my quizzes normally (sighed). I remember the first time i saw the big "Good!!!", i laughed out very laud because i think I'll be the only one who, considering my age as well, will receive it throughout the semester. 10 mins later, disappointment started to fill in my heart and i cannot laugh any longer. Well, i really appreciate the "true meaning" behind the big "Good!!!" that my tutor trying to bring across and i shall remember that forever.

Sometime, i just wonder am i another "Naruto"? A Naruto "accidentally" born in the world of physics (instead of the world of ninja)? The real Naruto is no longer a drop out now, but look at me... Baka na..

Well, AY09/10 Sem 2 is already on its way now. With Naruto's nindo in mind, i think eventually everything will be just fine.

"Never give up."

Finally.. AY09/10 Sem 1 is over..

"It's 3 o'clock now. Stop writing. Please remain seated while we are collecting your paper and...". I took a very deep breath and sighed right after knowing that it was already 3 o'clock. Well, it was my last exam paper for AY09/10 Sem 1 and my heart was, ironically, filled with guilty, sorrow and joy.

I sighed because days gone by very fast; I felt guilty because I don't think I've put 100% of my effort into my study; I felt sorrow because i don't think I've done well for my exams; I felt joy simply because finally I got one month break after 15 weeks of study.

Some of you may think that it is almost impossible or even crazy to put 100% of our effort into something. If we were to put 100% of our effort into study, it means that we will have no entertainment and our life is simply sleep, eat and study for 15 weeks.

Before the semester start, i was really planning to do so. Unfortunately, I can only hold it for 3 days and my faith started to shake. "Forget it! 80% of effort is already more than enough! Normal human being can only put in 70% of their effort! I'm far more hard working than they do! Let's watch Naruto now!" I told myself so and i smiled. By using the same excuse now and then, eventually, I think I've only put in 50% of my effort into study.

By looking back now, I felt really guilty by telling myself so. If my results turned out to be satisfying, should I thank Buddha (I'm a Buddhist.) or simply 50% of my effort is good enough? What if my results turned out to be disappointing? Do I really have to push myself to 100% for next semester?

One of my friend suggested me to just try my best to study(I really don't know how to define the meaning of "try my best" here. How much is "my best"?); take a reasonably break when you are tired or bored and don't "look back" (by writing this entry, I'm "looking back" and it is against the suggestion) and be content with whatever grades you got.

Well, maybe I can only put in 50% of my effort and it is already "my best" (it seems a little bit too low...right?).

ES2007 Final Reflection.

November 12th, 2009 will be my last tutorial session for ES2007S. Looking back, it was August 17th, 2009 I have my first tutorial session for ES2007S and it seems that August 17th, 2009 was just yesterday. I stepped in the classroom with poor communication skills and I have no idea how to construct a proposal. My friend (non-physic major) told me that this module is going to take me a lot of time for the workload and I will have a lot of presentations (which most of the students don’t like). With the interest in improving my communication skill, I neglected all the negative “feedback” and I told myself: “I’m going to do this.” Ironically, I found that it is the easiest module for this semester (compare with my core modules and neglecting the grade)! Thankfully, I enjoyed every single moment I have with this module. I’m so glad that I have a very knowledgeable and supportive tutor, Happy sensei as well as a group of classmates who are passionate about effective communication. My classmates are not only passionate about the module, they are also very friendly and more than willing to help (for blog, peer teaching review as well as proposal’s comments). Thus, with the help from my classmates, I believe that my communication skills have improved and I’m more comfortable with presentations. THANK YOU!

Honestly, this module does provides me an excellent platform to improve my communication skills but due to time constraint (we have only 12 weeks for a semester), I think I’m still green in communication skills and there is room for improvement. How I wish there is ES3007S in CORS! Well, if there is no ES3007S in CORS, I guess I shouldn’t just stop learning communication skills. In fact, I should be independent and start learning communication skills by myself by connecting myself to the world! The world is the best platform for me to improve my communication skills!

Last but not least, all the best to Happy sensei as well as all my dear classmates of ES2007S Group 5 AY09/10 Semester 1 at NUS.

A bouquet of rose for Happy sensei as well as my dear classmate fellows.
